I think the ability to control your thermostat remotely is a must. We have a cabin on a lake 200 miles from our home. It is so nice to be able to turn the heat or air conditioning on so the cabin is a cozy temperature when we arrive. It’s also nice to be able to check on the temperature in the winter.
I actually have three different thermostats. All are controllable by an app or by devices like Alexa.
LAKE CABIN THERMOSTAT – At the lake cabin, I have a Honeywell WiFi thermostat. It was very in expensive and does the trick just fine. The app on my phone is super easy to use and I’ve never had any issues with the app. My one gripe is that using the actual thermostat on the wall is confusing. In fact, I just use the app when I want to control anything beyond raising or lowering the temperature.
HOME THERMOSTAT – At our current house, I have another Honeywell thermostat. It’s a bit fancier and more expensive, but the full color display looks awesome. The thermostat itself and the app are both easy to use. The one I am linking to below is very similar to the one I have… but mine is an older version and can’t be purchased. I like that it displays the current temperature outside.
VINTAGE REMODEL HOME – At the house I am renovating, I have TWO of the GoControl Thermostats. I use one to control the house central heating and air conditioning. The other is connected to a free standing natural gas fireplace. The thermostat for the fireplace needed to be battery operated (no low voltage “C” wire). These thermostats are Z-Wave wifi units and connect to the “SmartThings” controller I have in the house. (SmartThings control my lights, appliances, alarm, and water shut off. If you are interested in making your house “smart”, I would strongly suggest you checkout the SmartThings unit.)
I am currently doing some MAJOR renovation in a part of the house heated and cooled by the central HVAC system. So, having the ability to shut it off and just use the fireplace is essential.
These thermostats are simple, easy to use, smart and inexpensive. If I was to choose one smart thermostat to buy, it would be this one.
