I carry one of these with me whenever I am working with electricity. It’s a quick and easy way to tell if the device you are working on is “hot.” It beeps and lights up if it senses electricity. I ALWAYS check that the sensor is working on a live outlet before checking the device I am working on. It would be my luck for the battery to be dead and it not beep.
I have also used it to trace live wires in the wall. It is sensitive enough to allow you to follow the “hot” electrical line behind the drywall.
I actually carry two non-contact voltage testers. If I am working with high voltage, I always check that there is no power with both.
