I paid to have someone else tape and texture my drywall. I have tried it myself and I wanted a professional job.
The guys who did the taping asked who did the drywall. They said it was one of the nicer jobs they had seen. I was proud of it.
There are two reasons it turned out so well. The first was THIS TOOL. It allows you to cut around each electrical box, window, and door frame perfectly. You just poke it into the middle of the box, drive it to the inside of the box, lift a bit to go over the edge of the box, then zip around the outside. It takes a bit of practice but after you have mastered it, every cutout is almost perfect. (I practiced on some scrap sheetrock.) I also mark close to where I think the box is so I know if the bit is going astray.
The second reason the drywall ended up looking nice is I use the biggest sheet possible. I don’t use the leftover odds and piece sheets together. Drywall is fairly cheap, so I don’t scrimp. Also, when I screw up, I cut another sheet. Even though I know they can usually patch my mistakes.
